Islandtoeverywhere - Adventure starts at your front door

When people think about adventure, they often picture long-haul flights, epic road trips or scaling mountains. But for me, adventure has never been about how far you travel. It's about curiosity, mindset and being willing to step outside and explore. I spent a lot of my life living in and around London, which isn't necessarily the first place people think of when they imagine nature and the outdoors. Yet some of my earliest memories are of weekends spent chasing adventure. Whether it was rock climbing, kayaking, hiking or simply discovering somewhere new, my parents made sure we spent time outside. I was lucky enough to work on the doorstep of Richmond Park for many years, and places like Box Hill were never far away when I needed fresh air. Those experiences shaped who I am today. They taught me that adventure doesn't begin when you board a plane or arrive at a destination. Adventure starts the moment you decide to look at the world around you differently.

Five years ago, I swapped Tooting for the Isle of Wight and, honestly, have never looked back. Living just minutes from the sea, surrounded by incredible coastal paths, woodlands and open spaces, feels like a perfect fit for the life we are building. The outdoors isn't something we have to plan for anymore; it's everyday life. Like most families, we juggle busy jobs, responsibilities and all the chaos that comes with raising young children. We'd love to spend every weekend exploring somewhere new, but the reality is that life often gets in the way. That's exactly why we've become even more intentional about exploring what's on our doorstep. Some days that means loading up the van, popping the roof tent and heading off to a local campsite. Other days it's finding a new walking route nearby, discovering a hidden beach we've never visited before or spending an afternoon on the paddleboards.

The scale of the adventure doesn't matter. What matters is making space for it. One of the biggest reasons this is important to me is because I want my children to grow up with the same love of nature and the outdoors that I was fortunate enough to experience. I want them to feel comfortable outside, to get muddy, to climb trees, to watch wildlife and to understand that some of life's best moments happen when you're disconnected from screens and connected to the world around you. I don't believe children need grand adventures to develop that connection. Sometimes the most meaningful memories are made much closer to home. A puddle-filled woodland walk. A picnic on the beach after school. Spotting a squirrel on a new trail. These moments all count. If you're looking for inspiration, there are so many ways to find adventure close to home. Start by exploring what's nearby. Search for local walking routes, parks, nature reserves or beaches you haven't visited before. National Trust properties are a brilliant way to discover new places, and social media can be an awesome source of inspiration too. Some of our favourite spots have come from recommendations shared by local people who simply love where they live.

Most importantly, try shifting your mindset. Adventure doesn't have to look the same for everyone. It might be taking a different route on your daily dog walk. It could be an early morning sea swim, a sunset stroll or exploring a nearby village you've driven through a hundred times but never stopped to visit. Every day presents an opportunity for a small adventure if we're willing to look for it. I've always found that spending time outdoors improves my wellbeing. It helps me slow down, clear my mind and reconnect with what matters most.

In a world that often feels busy and overwhelming, nature has a way of bringing everything back into perspective. That's one of the reasons we love Resme and what the brand stands for. Their belief that life is better outdoors resonates deeply with us. Adventure isn't reserved for weekends away or bucket-list destinations. It lives in the everyday moments. In the places we pass by without noticing. In the decision to say yes to fresh air, exploration and a little bit of curiosity. So wherever you are, whether it's a bustling city street, a quiet village or somewhere in between, step outside and see what you can discover.
Your next adventure might be closer than you think.
